Luis Mejia – Stanford Office of Technology Licensing

For more than 40 years, OTL’s goal has been to successfully transfer Stanford cutting edge technology to industry via both start-ups and existing companies. Notable Stanford licenses include the exclusive license to Google and the 440 nonexclusive licenses to the basic gene-splicing patents. To date, OTL has received over 8,900 inventions that resulted in 3000 licenses and $1.4B in royalty revenue. OTL is one of the country’s most active offices in the field of technology transfer from university to industry. Their staff, most of whom are professionals engaged directly in licensing, manages over 3,000 active dockets. OTL’s licensing professionals evaluate technologies that are disclosed to OTL and then develop a licensing strategy for the particular technology. Each associate is responsible for a portfolio of dockets from “cradle to grave.” The associates each have an area of technical expertise in life sciences, physical sciences or both.
