Nathan Fletcher

 

Nathan Fletcher is the Senior Director of Global Strategic Initiatives for Qualcomm Technologies Incorporated. In this role, he leads business and strategic initiatives globally to identify, develop and expand opportunities where technology has the power to positively transform people’s lives. He serves in a leadership role with strategic partners for Qualcomm such as the World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiatives and others. As a member of the Global Market Development team Fletcher also identified business development opportunities in new markets.

Nathan is also a Professor at the University of California, San Diego where he teaches Political Science. Before joining Qualcomm in January 2013, he was an elected member of the California State Assembly where he served as Chairman of the Assembly Select Committee on Jobs in the New Economy and Vice Chairman of the Assembly Health and Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committees.

Assemblyman Fletcher is the author of Chelsea’s Law – landmark legislation that transformed the way California deals with violent sexual predators who target children. Chelsea’s Law includes a true life without parole sentencing option for the most serious first-time offenders; fifty-one separate penalty increases for sex crimes perpetrated against children, and increased penalties for human trafficking.

Assemblyman Fletcher was consistently rated one of the most effective legislators in California and has been honored as legislator of the year by diverse groups such as BIOCOM, Tech America, Veterans of Foreign War, Crime Victims United, the Black Chamber of Commerce, along with many others. He authored more than 30 pieces of legislation that were signed into law, including bills related to tax reform, veterans, job creation, water infrastructure, pension reform, modernization of state government, health care and public safety.

Before his election to the California legislature, Nathan served as a Human Intelligence/Counterintelligence Specialist in the United States Marine Corps where he was decorated for valor in combat. On his last deployment, he served as a team commander of a joint service/multi-agency human intelligence team operating throughout the Horn of Africa and the Near East. For this duty he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

In 2004, he served eight months in the Sunni Triangle region of Iraq. Among the awards he received for this tour is the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat “V” for valor, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Iraqi Campaign Medal. Fletcher is a recipient of additional military awards including the Benton R. Montgomery Award for Excellence and Walter Morris Honor Graduate Awards. He is a graduate of the US Army Airborne Course and Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Additionally, Nathan has been active with several international non-governmental organizations to build and improve democracies in countries including East Timor, Cambodia, Serbia, and Myanmar. He has participated in international delegation trips to foster relationships and strengthen cultural ties with countries such as Mexico, China and Korea.

A frequent commentator, advocate and public speaker Fletcher has appeared on programs including The Today Show, Larry King Live, MSNBC’s Hardball, CNN, Fox News and in national print publication such as the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.

Nathan represents Qualcomm on boards including the Executive Committee of CONNECT, the Statewide Leadership Council of the Public Policy Institute of California and personally serves on the Community Advisory Council for Voices for Children and the San Diego Regional Advisory Council of the California League of Conservation Voters Education Fund. He is an Ironman Triathlete and avid outdoorsman who enjoys surfing, alpine mountaineering and is a Crossfit devotee.

Nathan Fletcher lives in San Diego with his wife Mindy and their sons Zach and Caleb.
